How our SK636 & SK638 Lights-Out Emergency Lights are used by governments, healthcare, hotels and more worldwide

Emergency light testimonial banner

As of 2023, we’ve upgraded our lineup and now proudly introduce the SK636V2. Better and brighter than the original, the SK636V2 Rechargeable Battery Powered LED Emergency Light is the ideal evolution in emergency lights. Check out our blog post to learn more.

Every so often we notice an order that grabs our attention.

For example in September 2017, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, we were contacted by the president of a Florida-based development company. He needed 24 of our longest-lasting emergency LED backup lights delivered within 48 hours to resume operations at one of their beachfront hotels. Amazon was sold-out (no surprise there, under the circumstances), and his guests were literally left in the dark.

We helped them out, and it’s a great story to share. But they’re not the only ones.

Hospitals, hotels, government buildings, condos, apartments… They all need backup lighting for emergencies and power failures. Building codes require hard-wired lights that are super expensive and provide only the bare minimum of lighting (as little as 30 minutes of light at a cost of over $6/minute). It’s not cost-effective to provide real, long-lasting, site-wide lighting using those units.

On the other hand, Ideal Security’s battery-powered emergency LED lights aren’t designed to satisfy the code requirements. They’re designed instead to be cost-effective complements. affordable enough. With dead simple installation, costs as low as $0.02/minute and providing up to 48 hours of continuous light you can use our lamps to dramatically increase the safety of our facility and provide peace-of-mind for both staff and guests.

Read more below about how commercial sites around the world are using Ideal Security Lights-Out battery-powered backup lights.

Hotels

Dallas, Texas

When: December 2018

Who: A 1,600-room hotel in the Market Center and Design District with over 600,000 ft2 of event space

Why: To be used as table-top lamps in the case of a power outage, complementing the code-required exit lighting already in place which provides only the bare minimum of lighting.

We have a large facility and sometimes when the power goes out for any reason at night it can get a little dark. The lights will be stored in our fire control room and will be dispersed by our security personnel in the event of a power outage.

Delray Beach, Florida

When: September 2017

Who: A beachfront hotel & spa

Why: In the aftermath of hurriance Irma, with power unreliable and no ETA on recovery, this hotel needed high-capacity additional lighting to get back up and running.

This is very important so we can resume operations after the storm.

Healthcare

Soldotna, Alaska

When: October 2018

Who:  The lab in a full-service hospital

Why: The lab was unable to hook up to the main hospital backup generator.

We need so many because we have to put them in every room- it’s a safety issue if we have a needle in a patient’s arm and the power goes out. It took quite a bit of research to find something that we were happy with.

Northern Haiti

When: January 2016

Who: The medical volunteers’ residence

Why: With a low budget and international volunteers regularly rotating in and out, they needed reliable, high-capacity, and cost-effective lights in the common areas.

We have about 400 volunteers a year and operate solely on generator power which goes off sometimes. These are important to the safety of the volunteers – especially since they are unfamiliar with the layout. I have other power failure lights in key places at the hospital, but not any with the capability of your product.

Government

Page, Arizona

When: February 2019

Who: A federal government bureau in Page, Arizona

Why: They placed them “through out the facility so in the event of an emergency or power failure our personnel would have light to find their way to safety.”

In a word, the Ladder-Aide is AWESOME!

I wanted to let you know what a fantastic product you have. I have been trying to complete a ceiling wiring project…

We recently received the following letter from Dave M of Hudson, WI

I wanted to let you know what a fantastic product you have.
I have been trying to complete a ceiling wiring project, at the top of a two-story stairwell in our home, for several weeks. However I was at a complete loss in trying to figure out how to safely access the 16 foot height.

I tried to find a specialty ladder but wasn’t willing to pay the exorbitant price that something like that would cost. I then considered building a platform, but wasn’t sure if that was the safest option. Then I found your product and decided to give it a try.

In a word, the Ladder-Aide is AWESOME!
It is everything your website says and more.

It was unbelievably simple to use and held the my aluminum extension ladder rock steady. I am normally a bit afraid of heights and being on ladders makes me nervous because they can shift so easily. I am also 6’5″ and weigh over 250 pounds.

To make matters worse, this project ended up being far more labor intensive than I expected it to be. As a result I spent nearly eight hours on the ladder, 16 feet in the air, over the course of two days. In all that time even going up and down the ladder, over and over and shifting my weight to different positions, the ladder didn’t budge even one inch during the entire time I was on it.

The Ladder-Aide is one of the best products I have ever used and was well worth every penny I paid for it.

Thank you for creating such a well thought out and safe product.

Sincerely,
Dave M

Thanks for the letter, Dave!

Our new favorite review

We just found the review below, posted last year, on Amazon.com.

Ken Anderson picked one up to address some household problems and avert any future violence. Not only is it positive, it’s well-written and hilarious! Our favorite line?

We can’t shoot the teenagers because that’s against the law. But we can make sure the hallway door stays closed. How? Through the simple expedient of installing a pneumatic door closer.

Wherever you are, Ken… We don’t think of ourselves as heroes. Just doing our jobs, one day at a time. Thanks for the high five!

Another pet-owner hack for the SK630 Pressure Mat

Reddit user @aveldina has found yet another use for the incredibly versatile SK630 Pressure Mat Alarm with Chime.

In her post Made a chime/beeping mat for running contact training!, aveldina explains how she used the SK630, along with a yoga mat, to train her border collie on a dogwalk course!

So, the pressure mat itself is a purchased mat. This is the mat. I purchased one from amazon for about $30 Canadian. The mat is not the full size of the contact, it’s just over a foot wide and almost 22″ long. I use a yoga mat to cover it and attach it to the dogwalk, http://imgur.com/a/U6eKO

Vi’s running contact is trained with the Silvia Trkman method, and well lots of help from Silvia too. When I am training running contacts with her, I focus on well centered or deep hits (where one foot is still hitting well centered). So for me the short design of the mat is actually good since I only want it ringing for hits in the center of the contact anyway. Silvia’s method focuses a lot on the running, and initially prioritizes running – so you don’t really worry about marking hits until you have good running in place without leaping.

She also posted a video of the course in action, on YouTube:

We’re always excited here at Ideal to see the outlier, long tail use cases for our products. Listening to our customers has really opened our eyes to all the different ways people use our pressure mat, especially when it comes to pet training.

Thanks @aveldina!

Protecting her parents

In September, we received a question from Kim B, asking about setting up a SK6 Series security system on a cable VoIP line.

From: Kim B

Hello

I purchased a security system for my parents not realizing their home phone runs thru their cable package and not phone lines. Is there any way to make the system work with this type of connection? If not, is there another system that is compatible with cable phone?

Our SK6 Series security system is designed for reliability. One of its top features is that it doesn’t need an internet or WiFi connection, and that it can work even through power outages (when your internet service would go down). To offer the level of reliability and compatibility we wanted, we designed it to run on regular landlines.

So we asked Kim more about her situation. She told us that she was looking for a system to provide some security for her aging parents. There had been some break-ins in their area recently, and they wanted to put in place an easy but reliable system that would provide some additional security in their home.

It is actually for my parents. They just need a basic security system as there have been some break ins in their area.

In the end, Kim and her parents decided they didn’t really need a remote notification system.

[My parents] decided to do a more simple system and did not really think they needed to get a call from the alarm and a simple alarm/siren would suffice.

A local alert and siren would be enough, they felt, to deter intruders and give her parents the advanced notice to respond by calling the police or their children themselves, if needed. Our SK6 Series includes a wide range of both sensors and alarms designed to be fully customizable to consumers’ needs. Kim and her parents were able to put together a local alert system that suited their needs.

Thanks for the story, Kim!

It Works! Our SK1215 on an old Anderson door

I needed to replace the old and worn brass handle set on my Anderson/EMCO door. So, I bought the above handle as it appeared to line-up well with the holes in my door. Other than the deadbolt not functioning, it looks great, the handle opens and closes as it should and the little lady is all smiles!

We received the following letter from Glenn of Walnut Creek, California. He used our SK1215 handle set to get the look he wanted on his existing Anderson/EMCO door. It took a little creative thinking, but we love this DIY attitude.

Thanks for letting us know, Glenn!

I needed to replace the old and worn brass handle set on my Anderson/EMCO door. I contacted Anderson, but the only replacement they had for this older model was another brass one and we wanted to change to Satin Nickel. Sadly, they no longer made that handle and the only color still available was brass.

So, I bought the above handle as it appeared to line-up well with the holes in my door and the overall footprint of the mechanisms. In fact, the top half of the unit did line-up well with the holes and the component parts also matched the outline of the old handle perfectly. In fact, the latching mechanism lined-up well with the old one so that it engages OK when the door is closed. The only part that did not match was the lower inside portion that contains the deadbolt style locking mechanism. Here, the holes were different, as was the locking method itself.

I didn’t care if my storm door locked, so I was able make the unit work. I did this by using the top screw hole that aligned perfectly with my old lock as the screw attaches to the front mechanism from the back. The difference is with the bottom hole. The lower hole on the new lock needs to come from the front side, requiring a nut on the back side. This is why the locking mechanism won’t work as it attaches in a completely different way than the old one.

So, all I did was get a 3″” long 6/32 screw that I inserted through the front hole, then through the door and then out of the hole in the mechanism in the back. I secured that screw with a stainless steel acorn nut and the job was done and looking beautiful. Other than the deadbolt not functioning, it looks great, the handle opens and closes as it should and the little lady is all smiles!

P.S.
